Placename Project Information
Fiontar (DCU) and The Placenames Branch (Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs) have created a database of Ireland’s placenames on this site. Work commenced on the first phase of the project in April 2007 and the Placenames Database of Ireland is to be launched 2 October 2008.

http://www.logainm.ie/

This resource is suitable for use by journalists and translators, students and teachers, historians and researchers in genealogy. It is a public resource for Irish people at home and abroad, and for all those who appreciate the rich heritage of Irish placenames.

The principal objective of the project is to make available through the Internet, Irish placenames that have been approved by the Placenames Branch, searchable under both Irish and English versions. The following additional features were also developed:

A system to enable simultaneous Irish-English and English-Irish translation of lists of placenames.

Sound recordings of some placenames. Sound files have been included in the entries of some of the placenames of Co. Waterford, Co. Galway and Co. Donegal. Sound files will be added to other counties on a phased basis. More information...

Information notes pertaining to certain placenames. Scanned images of some of the historical source material have been included on the site under ‘Archival records.’ Some of these records will be input gradually in a searchable form on the public interface.

The pilot version of the site was tested by groups of users from April to September 2008. Feedback from these groups was incorporated in the final version of the site.

Note by jh
Be aware that "parish" means "civil parish".

The map grid reference refers to the Ordnance Survey Discovery Series of maps. The Discovery Series maps are current, inexpensive and readily available worldwide at specialist map store. They are available on line from Ordnance Survey Ireland (www.osi.ie)
Map coordinates.

Unfortunately, the name and number of the Ordnance Survey Discovery Series map has been omitted and a ten digit grid reference included. A ten digit grid references a square of one metre by one metre.

On the Logainm website the grid reference for Corderry townland, Roscommon, is 85625 11919. The last two digits for both Eastings and Northings need to be deleted. On Ordnance Survey Discovery Series map 30 the map grid reference for Corderry is 856 119.
