I am trying to gather information about a Dr. John Beirne who was a student with my father Martin Gaughan at St. Nathy's college, in the 1890s.
Any information would be grateful received.
Thanks

Monica, have you been on the College's website? They have listed some of their recent pastpupils and you get the general impression that they might just have earlier records which might be useful to you. Fiona |

Dear Fiona,
Thank you for your interest. I have now found out the following about Dr Beirne:-
On Xandra’s Kildurff list two students were also marked with an arrow and MB to Martin Gaughan. One was Dr John Beirne and details from 1911 census Residents of house number 33.2 in Frenchpark Town (Frenchpark, Roscommon). He was single aged 30 and was a general practitioner.
Beirne, John W. (1881-19XX), medical doctor. (The census shows he was born in 1881). A native of Ballaghaderreen. He practiced in Frenchpark and was Roscommon County Coroner for a period. He was the dispensary doctor for the Frenchpark district in 1921. [He was a step uncle of late Paddy Beirne, Terenure who died in September 2008]. (Co. Roscommon Directory 1922, W. H. Cartan, publisher, 1922). A link with this information can be made with the 1901 census details for St. Nathy’s College.
(Used the search engine with Ballaghaderreen in the Townland Field and surname blank). Could get death details etc from Roscommon Registry.
Xandra is publishing a book for 250th anniversary of St. Nathy's this August which will also be of much interest. Hope to get more information.
Regards
Monica |
