2012 Ballykilcline Reunion Canceled
Hello, Friends,
I write to inform you with regret that the Ballykilcline Reunion in Ireland this August is canceled for lack of a sufficient number of registrants to cover the cost.
From the feedback I have received, the cost of the trip, especially the air fare, has been a major deterrent to registrations. Indeed, the cost of air travel has risen significantly since our last reunion in Ireland. Several people wanted to go but were prevented from making a decision this early due to medical situations. For a few others, the dates conflicted with other family events or with the need to help family of the next generation who face unfriendly job markets or hold large student loans. And though we advertised the reunion as open to non-members, in fact, no non-member Roscommon researchers signed up.
For the Society as an organization, we lose the chance to connect with NUI faculty, renew our contacts in Strokestown and Kilglass, and to view and perhaps study the Mahon records at Castletown House. We also, of course, lose the great benefit of sharing with each other, one of the strongest points of collective research. In its place, it is to be hoped that members will start taking greater advantage of this list-serv to do just that and to share what they learn through our newsletter.
I will send word of the cancellation and our thanks to Dr. Ciaran Reilly at Maynooth, our liaison there, Mike Lennon, Richard Farrell, and Kieran Furey, who all planned to speak during the Reunion this summer, and to the Famine Museum which was invited to send a speaker. We are grateful to them for their interest and willingness to join us in a Reunion.
I suspect that a few of the members who did register may continue with their personal plans to go to Ireland this summer and hope that they may write about their trips and their research, and perhaps offer photos, for The Bonfire. Perhaps some of the speakers will do so as well
With disappointment,
Mary Lee Dunn Maguire
