The first mention of the Anglo-Norman (subsequently known as Old English) Gaynard family in Ireland was in about 1280, at a place named Cargin Castle (Carraigin)near Headford in the County Galway. Sir Adam Gaynard was one of the first sherriffs of Connaught. There is mention of him and his son William in the English parliament of 1290. William later fought with Edward I (the hammer of the scots) in Scotland and was also knighted. A William (I am not sure if it was the same one, because Adam had a brother, Peter, who also owned land in Galway--in fact the Gaynards owned nearly all of the land on the East side of the Corrib up to the Mayo border at that time) William was murdered by a bunch of men from the de Ryddelsford family, who were probably contesting the land rights to Carraigin. The Black death apparently weakened the family a lot. There are other mentions of the Gaynards in Carraigin in 1498 and 1598. They most probably fought on the Royalist side in the Civil War against Cromwell (the "Confederation of Kilkenny"). After the surrender of Galway, Cromwell confiscated the lands of the Catholic landowners, to give it to the soldiers he had brought with him from England. This was some time around 1650-1651. The family which took over Carraigin was named Staunton (now Lynch-Staunton) one of whose descendants is or was a member of the Canadian parliament. After the Cromwellian confiscations, the Gaynards were driven up into Connaught. Some of them seem to have stopped off in Ballinrobe. My part of the family eventually ended up in Belmullet in Erris, although from then on there was gradual erosion through emigration to the U.S. and England. Most of the Gaynards who had remained into the 20th century left Erris in the 1950s, though there are still a few of the name in the southern part of the peninsula. The Togher family name is also found around Belmullet and some of my own cousins are named Togher. They live in England and I live in France. If you would like further information please contact me. : This is my first venture into geneology on the internet. My mother has some fairly extensive hard copy information. Do you have information regarding records on John McGinty and Mary Maud O'Donnell. Records would probably be in the Catholic church for Ballycroy. Dates would be around early 1830s. Any information or leads to other sites or points of contact would be greatly appreciated.: David Armstrong : Yokosuka Japan
