: I have a ancestor from Elphin, Roscommon. His name is James SRUHEAN or SRUHAN. He arrived in Australia in 1841. His father was John & he had land in the Townland of Corricknagot, Diocese of Elphin, Parish of Tassara. I would love to hear from anyone who could help me find any information on this family. Thanks I cannot help you with specific information on your request. However I may be able to offer a few ideas. Spellling from that era is notoriously unreliable. I assume the townland you are interested in is CARRICKNAGAT in the civil parish of TISRARA which is in the PL Union of ROSCOMMON.
Note civil parishes were used for census purposes, civil registration etc. They are not necessarily the same as Church Parishes. There were usually 2/3 civil parishes to each church parish. TISRARA is in the Church Parish of DYSART (Sometimes known as Dysart and Tisrara). Unfortunately they only started parish registrations in Dysart in 1850 and civil registrations started in the 1860's. Therefore not of much help to you.
If you have access to a Family History Center (FHC) you may be able to access the Tithe Applotment Books which lists householders and little else in the 1830's
One other suggestion is to do with the name . Again spelling is unreliable because of the anglicisation of names that happened around this time. I have never heard the name Sruhan or Sruhean. I suggest that the name you are researching is the one known as SHRYANE today. There are some in Roscommon.
Good luck with your research and sorry that I cant be more positive.
John
