John (Sean) O’Beirne, Rest in Peace
Hello, Friends,
Many of you in past years received answers to your questions and help on your searches on this board from John (Sean) O’Beirne. I am sorry to tell you that Sean died peacefully on April 25 in a hospital after a short illness and with members of his large family, many from Ireland, near. His funeral was on Saturday in New York. I waited for permission from his family to post this note.
Sean signed some of his replies here with his full name, sometimes just Sean or just John. Perhaps you didn’t know he was the one who had helped you. He did a number of favors for the Ballykilcline Society as well.
Sean was born in Tulsk in Roscommon. His parents were Michael and Rita O’Beirne. Sean immigrated to the U.S. in 1961. His death notice in the New York Times said that he “had a great love for this country and was especially proud of the Irish contribution to its founding.” Sean was a Citibank executive for more than 30 years. He also was the editor of the O’Beirne Family Journal, which was available online for some years. In the funeral guest book, one memorialist called him the “backbone of the entire Beirne clan,” which was rooted in northeastern Roscommon.
In lieu of flowers, his family asked that contributions be made to the Irish Repertory Theater, 132 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011.
Rest in peace, Sean, and thank you for all you did.
