Thank You John Hunter. Very Helpful.

Now if I were leaving to the USA in the 1800's and leaving my favorite uncle THOMAS behind never to see him again I just might name my first boychild - THOMAS. Thus we have a name connection across the pond - a clue!

In the GILLOOLY's it seems they were stuck on certain given names which probably carry back to Ireland.

Time will tell.

MAJOR CORRECTION: G-Grandmother was Mary WHITE not Mary Durkin. Owens brother Patrick married the Durkin.

So it was Owen Gilluly DOB 1821 and Mary "WHITE" Gilluly DOB 1833 in IRELAND.

I have also found that Owen came from KILBRIDE where his family is listed in the cemetery.

Now where do I go from here?

Hi, John,

There was a Mary White living in Ballykilcline and, from what I can tell, she was born about 1833.

She appears on a tenant list that seemed to be compiled around 1840. She appears with the Fallon family, as follows:

Widow Bridget Fallon 50
Thos her Son 32
John do 26 married off the lands
Garret do 22
Bridget her Daughter 20 blind about 8 years
Catherine do 18
Mary [White, penciled in] her granddo 14 orphans [notes all penciled in]
Catherine White, granddaughters 5

So she was the granddaughter of Bridget Fallon Sr., evidently through her Mary's mother. While the list seemed to have been made about 1840 or even somewhat earlier, the names that were pencilled in were added later, some of them at the time of the evictions, in 1847-48.
Do you know whether your Mary White had any relations named Fallon or a younger sister named Catherine?
Some of the Fallon siblings were among the evictees to the U.S. Bridget Sr. was not, nor were the White sisters listed as evictees who got the bounty to leave.

I'm still working on this one. It has been found that several Fallons setteled in Lewis County, West Virginia. Kathryn Fallon still lives in the area.

I went to grade school with her but omitted the family name from the Lewis County Irish. Sorry Kathryn, my omission.
Omission corrected!

I will contact her tomorrow to see what she remembers of this puzzle.

I can't believe the information that is still available and I have not paid one cent,"shilling", yet.

Well I'm still working on this - moving those puzzle pieces around. I've gotten a few more clues and more info is on the way.

I did find out Owen and Mary had 17 children. GOD BLESS MARY! We have identified 16 of them.

Hi,

I think your assumptions on First Names could be dangerous. While you're dead right in stating that William, Elizabeth and Henry, for example, are English in origin, the first 2 in particular were very common in use in Leitrim in the 19th Century, and I suspect similarly so in Roscommon. I've pulled together a list of around 600 people from my research into Leitrim Doyles from 1800 to 1930, and there are roughly 20 Williams and 30 Elizabeths. Even the unusual Henry pops up 4 times.

Hello Tom,

You are quite right!
After seeing the list of given names presented by John Hunter I realized that I went "out on a limb" with the name thing.

However, my GILLOOLYs show a reuse of given names from family to family.

Very confusing when doing research.

Thanks for your consideration of this theory Smile

This morning I phoned Michael & Eileen Gillooly. They have been to IRELAND investigating PATRICK the brother of OWEN.

According to them PATRICK & OWEN GILLULY lived in County Roscommon, town of Roscommon, Parish of Kilbride.

This information came from Marie Gillooly grandaughter of PATRICK GILLULY.

Still digging!

In Irish folklore the hawthorn, or whitethorn, is also sometimes referred to as
the fairy bush, and it was considered bad luck to cut it in fear of offending
the fairies that inhabit the tree. However, during the May Day celebrations
the collecting of the sprigs and flowers was allowed for use in the
festivities, after which they were placed in the home to banish all evil
influences.

Hello Mary Lee,

We have found a Hawthorn bush growing behind the GILLOOLY West Virginia, Postal
Office, and homestead. I plan a visit there on May 1 in memory of the IRISH.

OK! OWEN GILLULY and wife MARY WHITE entered the United States in 1849 according to the US Census of 1900.
Owen Jr. was the first born in 1854, where ?.
Mary was the second born in 1858 in Wisconsin.

Questions:

1. Did they come throught Canada.
2. Did OWEN work on the canals in Canada?
3. Where did OWEN & MARY marry?
4. Where was OWEN JR. born?
5. Is there a birth record in Wisconsin in the archives for Mary born 1858 ?
6. Do I expect to much?

I think I feel safe in posting this!

Three young girls, traveling alone it appears, arrived in Boston Port on April 5, 1849. Mary White age 16 born 1833 - Catherine White age 16 born 1833 and Ellen White age 15 born 1834. National Archives Number M277, Roll 28.

Where was OWEN and where was his brother PATRICK in 1849
were they in hiding?

There is another MARY WHITE who entered through QUEBEC who fits the arrival date and the age. But she did not have a sister CATHERINE!

Continued!

Cousin,

John Patrick

OK! Mary and Catherine were twins.
When OWEN and MARY married the first boy was named after daddy, OWEN. The second child born was named after mommy, MARY.
The third child was named after ELLEN.
Later twins were born JOHN and CATHERINE.

Its the "NAME GAME".

Now lets shift from G-Grandmother Mary & Owen GILLULYs family to G-Grandfather Tomothy & Anne Goluly.

Mary and Owen lived in Kingsville,WV. Came there with the building of the B & O Railroad from Allegheny, Virginia.

Timothy & Anne Goluly lived in Weston, WV. Came there with The Northwestern Virginia Railroad from Wheeling, WV.

The catholic church attempted to standardize the spelling of the name in the 1880s' to GILLOOLY however OWEN refused.

His brother PATRICK who married the DURKIN complied.

OWENs daughter MARY ELIZABETH GILLULY died in LosAngeles in 1952 under OWENs spelling.

Don't confuse the names!
