Churches, People and Landscape.
A new book published to mark the 150th anniversary of St Michael’s Church Drumlion is a rich source of information for researchers interested in life in County Roscommon.
The 352 page book, by historian John Keenehan, contains details of the people, dwellings, schools, industries, pubs, culture and sport of the area over the past 150 years, as well as 19th century records including townlands records and Griffiths valuations.
A foreword by Irish president Mary McAleese sets the scene.
Part of Mary McAleese's forword:
"The memories recalled here by my father and others tell of a strong sense of community that was such a natural and intimate part of ordinary life. The small school, the rambling house and the local hall were part of the rich fabric of parish life, not just in Drumlion but in so many parts of rural Ireland. Here people lived lives of hardship redeemed by their own goodness to one another."
The book is available from John Keenehan,
