Amazing new website County Roscommon Council – Graveyards

A Graveyard survey has been compiled for the Heritage Department of Roscommon County Council by James Ganly.

A. It is hoped the County Council will add the Civil Parish for each graveyard.

B. The Map grid references listed for Killukin Old Graveyard is 192839 297899.

To be of use to Family and Local Historians, this should be altered to read 928 978; the grid reference as shown on Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Discovery Series map number 33.

An update of my post of the 7th February 2007.

I have had no success in having changes made to the Roscommon County Council’s Burial Ground website. http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/burialgrounds/search.aspx

Comment 1.

In western countries most people are buried in a cemetery.

A "Google" search for "Roscommon cemetery" will not find the Roscommon Burial Ground website.

The word "Cemetery" needs to be included in the title to allow the website to be found by Search Engine "crawlers".

At most this will involve a few minutes work.

Roscommon County Council (RCC) Burial Ground website – Killummod graveyard.

Most County Roscommon 19th century records are to be found in Civil parishes.

Only baptisms and church marriages are recorded in Catholic parishes.

Originally an ecclesiastical division, the Civil Parish was, until comparatively recent times, an area for Civil purposes. The Civil Parish is the key to finding your Irish ancestors as most old record categories embrace this geographical division. Today the term "Civil Parish" is seldom used in Ireland except in genealogical research.

The existence of Civil parishes is the second best kept secret in Ireland. All Civil parishes are listed in the readily available publication “General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland”. From a researcher’s point of view, the best kept secret in Ireland is the list of townlands in a Catholic parish.

There are 62 Civil parishes and 34 Catholic parishes in county Roscommon.

My offer to provide (at no cost) the name of the Civil parish for all Roscommon Burial grounds has been ignored.

The grid reference given on the RCC Burial Ground website for Killummod graveyard is 192173 295066.

If you click on the "map" on the same webpage (part of Discovery Series road map 33) you find the grid reference is 921 950

In order to give the standard 6 figure grid reference from the 12 figure grid reference, the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th and 12th digits must be omitted.
It is important not to read just the first 6 digits.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 . Digits numbers 1, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12 must be
omitted.

Confused?

To convert the 12 digit reference to a 6 digit reference proceed as follows:

1 921 732 950 66


The six figure grid reference is 921 950

A 12 figure grid reference identifies a square of one metre sides.

Surely, the grid reference is meant to locate the Burial Ground, not pinpoint the exact location of an infant's coffin!

How complicated can one get?

My offer to provide the six figure map grid reference (at no cost) for all Burial grounds
has been ignored.
