District Electoral Divisions – 1901 and 1911 Censuses of County Roscommon.

The National Archives Ireland has announced that
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html

That the entire 1901 Census of Ireland will be online by the end of June 2010.

All thirty-two counties for 1911 are now available free on the above website.

Also the 1911 census is now searchable by all 18 fields or a combination of them.

A major problem with the National archives census website is that County “area” search options are limited to:
• Townland/street
• DED

To find details of Townlands in County Roscommon visit:
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/TOWNLAND/town.html (Note that the Parish listed in the townland database is the Civil Parish, not the Catholic Parish).

To find the DED
The easiest way to find the location of a County Roscommon Poor Law Electoral Division, later known as District Electoral Division (DED) is to visit page 10 of Liam Byrne’s free Roscommon History website

To find the Catholic parish and DED for all townlands in County Roscommon visit:

Poor Law Unions were subdivided into Electoral Divisions (DEDs) that returned elected representatives to serve on the Boards of Guardians. The applicable Electoral Division for a group of townlands can be found in the Indexes to the 1871, 1901 and the 1911 censuses (but not the index to the 1851 census)

Free County Leitrim and County Roscommon source material available online:

1901 Census extracted by Roger McDonnell visit:
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/ (note the “Parish” is the Civil parish, not the Catholic parish).

Research in County Roscommon is very expensive. I suggest you don’t pay for Irish research until you understand how the system operates.
