I am looking for any information on the Hardiman family, particularly my great grandfather Richard Hardiman, living in Roscommon in the late 1800's. emigrated to the US via Ellis Island probably about 1880. My great grandfather went by the name of "Dick" rather than Richard. The older traditional spelling of the Hardiman name is O'hArgadain. Any information related to the family is appreciated.

Thanks!

An Irish research plan is directly dependent on the amount and specificity of the information available. Every effort should be expended toward identifying the exact location, i.e. the name of the townland or parish of the immigrant ancestor. In order to accomplish this goal, one must first search the “New country (US, Canadian, UK or Australian) sources”. These include a study of all the personal or family, civil, ecclesiastical, LDS, and other library data available, with an emphasis on localising the family's place of origin in Ireland. Only after exhaustive work in the foregoing areas should the Irish sources be consulted. (Source: Dr. James Small, noted American genealogist. 1988).

John;

Thank you very much for the info you provided.

Unfortunately, I am working with very little to go on. From all accounts, my great grandfather was very bitter about his "exile" and would speak very little about his past in Ireland.

Approx year of birth- 1874 (although census records indicate that he was unsure of his year of birth)
No record of his parents
No record of any siblings
He was Catholic
No record of his occupation is Ireland
Unknown if he left family in Ireland

He was married to Elizabeth Keegan. We believe he was married in Ireland
In the US he was an ironworker (in the US sense, a construction worker that erects the steel frames of buildings)

He settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, He lived there until his death (a suburb on NYC)
Richard's children were all born in the US

We are working through the US sources as best we can, at the moment we are still unclear as to his port of immigration.

Merry Christmas
Joe
