The following sons were born to Carberry O’Beirne and his wife Margaret Hanly in Camogue/Cammoge, Elphin parish, Co. Roscommon: John (or Owen) born/baptized Sept. 10, 1810; Thomas b/b April 12, 1813; Michael b/b Jan, 3, 1817; Bernard b/b Feb. 27, 1822.

The following sons were born to Fergus O’Beirne (son of Carberry above) and his wife Margaret McDermott in Camogue/Cammoge, Elphin parish, Co. Roscommon: Michael born/baptized Aug. 28, 1827; Martin b/b Oct. 21, 1841.

Two of the second family emigrated: Fergus (born 1840) to Australia and Roderick (born 1850) to the U.S. Three of their 1st cousins, and next farm neighbors, also emigrated to Australia: Thomas (born 1836), James (born 1838) and Francis (born 1851).

I suspect that all six of those “missing” lads above also emigrated but I don’t know where.

In 1861 Camogue/Cammoge was transferred to the parish of Ogulla and is now part of the parish of Tulsk. The old spelling of Cammoge is extant on old maps but the current spelling is Camogue.

The Australian settlers kept the “O” in their names, at least for a generation, while the emigrant to the U.S. dropped it. Many O’Beirne’s also changed the spelling to the more popular Byrne or Burns. We have a DNA database of O’Beirne’s known to be from Co. Roscommon at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Byrne/default.aspx#results This is a project of Paul Burns who believes he’s an O’Beirne. Paul is looking for more O’Beirne’s to participate and I’m looking for my “lost” lads.

I should have added the address of the O'Beirne website. It is: http://www.obeirnefamily.cwc.net/
There you will find about 700 pages about our small clan. I hope you visit and if you are an O'Beirne, please send me a note.
