My Family of Finns lived in Tawnaghbeg around the early 1820s to the late 1880s I believe ( there could still be family there today). My Grandad James Finn was born there in 1870 approx. His Father was John Finn. Could anyone tell me which church you would have attended those days, for baptisms, marriages and Mass. I know and have been to the cathedral in Ballaghaderreen. Just wondered if Tawnaghabeg had a nearby church. Many Thanks. Smile Tracey

Hi Tracey,
I do not have a direct answer for you regarding the church that your grandad or his father would have attended, however I am curious about your James Finn born approx. 1870. My grandfather (Patrick Finn) had a half brother named James Finn who was born in 1876. If you are certain about the father of your James, then we are talking about two different people. However it never hurts to ask and make sure. The father of my James and Patrick Finn was another Patrick Finn and they were born in the townland of Lisduff in the civil parish of Tibohine County Roscommon.

I look forward to hearing from you....

Ed Finn

I hope you find a connection to Ed Finn’s family.

ED Finn and his son Shaun of New Jersey, USA, provide the Leitrim-Roscommon Web Site and Bulletin Board as a community service. There is free access to this major research source www.leitrim-roscommon.com/

There is no Tawnaghbeg townland in County Roscommon. Visit
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/TOWNLAND/town.html
and http://www.seanruad.com/

Note that Civil and Catholic Parishes are not the same.

From Townlands in Poor Law Unions (Handran):
Tawnaghbeg townland,
Kilbeagh Civil parish,
Swineford Poor Law Union,
Lowparks Registrar’s District,
Doocastle District Electoral Division.

Tawnaghbeg townland is most likely in Carracastle Catholic parish. Should be easy to determine the Catholic Parish using Google or some of the links below.

From 1901 Census extracted by Roger McDonnell
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtm
Tawnaghbeg townland,
Kilbeagh Civil parish,
Costello Barony,
County Mayo,
Household: Finn John (80 years) retired farmer. Other occupier Nora (70 years)

The LDS British Isles Vital Records set of 16 CDs lists the birth of James Finn and two siblings. There may be other siblings born before Civil registration commenced in 1864. The records are photocopies of the actual birth register. The number before “Lowparks” is the page number in the register

LDS Films can be viewed worldwide at Major Public Libraries anf Family History Libraries.

I suggest you don’t pay for any Irish research until you know how the system works.

Dear John
Thank you so much for your time and information on John Finn. I truely appreciate your message.

I believe Tawnaghbeg was and still is in Co. Mayo. I've been to Ballaghaderren on a few occasions studying the family tree etc. Also been to Dublin a few times, gathering family tree "stuff".

I've also notice in the 1901 census a John Finn with a wife named Nora. Thank you for your Info on the Siblings of James Finn. I wonder if this is the family I'm looking for. It's true what you said about being careful and not paying out for research until you are absolutely sure. Its an expensive but worth while hobby - tracking down our ancestors!! Apolologes for not getting back sooner. Have lots of things going on at home.

Dear Ed. Thank you for your reply. As far as I know My James Finn didn't have any half or step siblings. I've got stuck on this part of the family tree. But will continue to perservere.

If my memory serves me right I think we compared our family trees a few years ago and couldn't at the time find a link. But who knows going back a bit further in time we may be Finns of the same line.

I was told once that my James Finn (My Great grandad) had a brother Tom (Mick Jack) Finn in Tawnaghbeg. Good Luck and Many Thanks Tracey

Hi Ed

Thanks for the information on John Finn. Very thoughtful of you to supply all that info. He has been a real "bug bear" to get any info on and to find. I will take note of your findings. Sorry only replying now as had a chest infection last week and only starting to get back to normal. Best wishes - Tracey.
