1901 & 1911 Censuses on-line - problems in using the National Archives Ireland website
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/index.html
The combined efforts of the National Archives Ireland and the National Library of Canada in putting the 1901 and 1911 Irish Censuses on-line are much appreciated, but of limited use to researchers and family historians in their present form.
The on-line censuses can provide a large amount of data for researchers and family historians provided they know the exact spelling of the Surname and Townland where the family lived at the time of the Census and the name of the applicable 1901 District Electoral Division for that townland.
An overseas researcher might know the townland, but few will know the name (and location) of the Electoral Division for townlands in County Roscommon or County Leitrim unless they have access to:
• Index to Baronies, Parishes, Towns and Townlands 1851 Census – either hard copy or CD.

• Ireland Townslands 1901 Census CD, by Dr. Perry McIntyre and Mr. Terry Eakin Published June 2009. http://www.irelandhome.com.au/shop.html
• Resource County Roscommon 2009 CD / Resource County Leitrim 2006 CD (check your local library to see if they have a copy). The 1901 Census data on these CDs is based on the work of Roger McDonnell of Phoenix, Maryland, USA, expanded to include the Civil parish (listed on Leitrim-Roscommon website as “Parish”), Catholic Parish, Poor Law Union, Registrar's District and District Electoral Division for each entry plus much more.
