: Supposedly my name McElderry comes from "Macgilledoroughe" If anyone has any suggestions what area I might start my search, I'd appreciate it very much. I am a laborer here in the United States, and can't afford these internet Geneology sites that want $200-$300 dollars US for searching. I'm hoping that word of mouth tradition still exisits. I found an "Owen McGilandryes" listed in the 1630 Muster Roll of the Ironmonger's Estate. I'm not sure if that is even related though. : Pre-thanks to anyone who can lend a hand. 'Kevin McElderryMcLysaght, in "The Surnames of Ireland," says "Mac Elderry: Woulfe gives Mac Giolla Dorcha (dorcha, dark) as the Irish form, which is probably correct. It is a well-known Tyrone name now numerous in Co. Antrim." He adds "Almost all names beginning with MacEl- have also the alternative spelling MacIl-."
