: Can anyone connect with a Mary Dolan who married JohnFahy in Roscommon had son Patrick in 1873 please?Sheila, I had some spare time at my LDS yesterday, and I looked through the index of marriages for the marriage of Mary Dolan and John Fahy. I made the assumption that Patrick was their first child and that they married shortly before his 1873 birth. Sure enough, I found a marriage registration reference for a John Fahy in the 1872 marriage index. According to the index, the registration of his marriage will be found on page 19 of volume 9 of the 1872 marriage register. I then found Mary Dolan's marriage registration reference in the index of 1872 marriages. The reference indicates that her marriage registration also will be found on page 19 of volume 9 of the 1872 marriages. Since the reference for both Mary and John is the same (page 19 of volume 9 of 1872 marriages) it is fairly certain that they married each other, and that this is the marriage you are interested in. From the index I can also tell you that John and Mary's marriage in 1872 occurred in Ballinasloe Superintendent Registration District, which is in southern Co. Roscommon. Most of these districts contain something like a dozen parishes (and a few hundred townlands), so that information doesn't narrow things all that much. However, the information contained in the actual registration gives date of event and townland where the event occurred, along with much other information. Unfortunately, the LDS only has marriage registrations on microfilm up to 1870. As far as I know John and Mary's registration is only available from the General Registration Office in Dublin. You can get ordering details from their website: www.groireland.ie A tip: ask only for a copy of the registration entry. It is much cheaper and contains all the information that you pay more for if you get a marriage or birth certificate. They just copy the information from the registration entry onto the certificate anyway. I then looked through the Civil Registration index of births for the birth registration of Patrick Fahy in 1873. Unfortunately in 1873 there were 10 Patrick Fahys born in Ireland. However, only one of the ten Patricks was born in the Ballinasloe district. The index indicates that his birth registration will be found on page 25 of volume 9 of 1873 birth registrations. The LDS DOES have this volume on microfilm, and it can be ordered from Salt Lake. Volume 9 was too large for one microfilm reel, so you are interested in two microfilms: FHL 0255880 and 0255881. From past experience I can tell you that Co. Roscommon events are normally contained on the first reel (0255880, in this case). I would order just that one and hope for the best. The information that you get from the marriage and birth registration should give you a leg up on research of your family. Good luck, Tom Voyles
