Catholic University of America is establishing an archive of Fenian records that were donated to the university by William D'Arcy who wrote a history of the Fenians that was published in the 1940s. It was an international organization working to free Ireland from British rule and was established about 1858. Tens of thousands of Irish immigrants in the U.S. belonged to it. The Fenians invaded Canada twice in the 1860s. The archive includes letters from leaders of the various local "circles." There are, for instance, at least five letters concerning Fenian groups in Troy, NY, and several concerning Fenians in Providence, RI. I also found a couple that deal with the circles in LaSalle County, Illinois. You can access these records at http://www.aladin.wrlc.org/dl/ Mary Lee
