This is a wonderful site, I have come across the mention of many towns and places which are meaningful to me such as Drumcar, Mountaintown, Ardee, Togher and more, these areas are where my Ancestors originated, and I have been searching them out. Seanruad did some wonderful work, and what a legacy he has left for the fortunate people who have come across his site. I feel priviledged. I refer to this site often. Thank you.

Sean was totally responsible for identifying the little village where my grandfather was born. I had spent many frustrating months trying to do so. I was a classmate of your dads' at DHS. We chatted often when the planning of a reunion was upon us. Last one, the 45th (1998), your dad donated bottles of wine for the tables, with special labels, honoring the event. I told him, during one of our chats about stamps, that I was a Gone with the Wind, addict. The next correspondence arrived with a GWTW, colorful envelope and stamp. He sure knew how to win brownie points! John was always a favorite classmate, I remember telling him, that this ensured permanent status in the good book with me. Our 45th renunion will be a little sadder without the redhead. I was so sorry to discover John is no longer with us, but I also know he didn't feel well and was unhappy with the condition his body was in with the progression of the diabetes. My condolances to you all, he will be remembered by myself and others, as he was when we were all young and healthy.

From what I have seen on this site from others that came before I am saddened that I did not find it before. I've been trying for years to learn more of my ancestry and to learn Gaelic. Now I find a site that might help, but the one behind it is gone. I wish that I had found it earlier. Murphy is a rather large surname and no site has been able to provide any help in narrowing it to one of the major four clans for me. I regret that SeanRuad has passed. I've just discovered Sean's marvelous townland site. I tried a half dozen Cork townlands, and got only one match. That made me understand the enormity of the spelling problem, and with Sean's partial-key search I found every townland I searched for. With Sean's death we lost a treasure, but he left us one. Today is the day I found John's amazing Web site. At a general level it is excellent example of the massive amount of volunteer work that goes into making family and local history such a satisfying hobby. At the individual level, this site stands out and reflects how visionary, perceptive and sensitive John must have been. Doing research in Ireland from North America is difficult enough because of the length of human settlement there, the language, and the loss of so much information in the 1922 fire in Dublin. Without this site non-Irish researchers could thrash around for months and years without progressing. Thanks to John and people like him we can focus on a townland much more quickly. I hope he got rewards on earth; he will definitely get them in heaven. And thanks to those who are maintaining the site and carrying on his legacy. You Irish are wonderful people.

I pulled down a copy of the 1901 Cesus with my grandfather and his family listed right there clear as the day. That was a year ago. I just got the time to come back and find definitions for "Barony" etc. when I noticed the death of Sean posted here. I never knew the man but felt, inside, the great loss to those of us who know not what we do but do it anyway with the tremendous help of Sean. No doubt the Lord has him working on the books in heaven!!

I am very sorry to learn of John's passing. I knew him for a brief time several years ago with the exchange of some emails. Today I was doing the census of 1901 for Clonakilty in Cork in Bishopsgate Dublin in the National Archives. We were looking up Michael Collins...the Michael Collins and the first thought I had was of John researching the same books that I was doing right at that present time. I never met the man in person but over the years he became like one of the family. I cannot put into words what I feel about this gentle giant. I found out where my ancestors came from just three days before we were to leave for Ireland. I entered the information that I had but still felt troubled by the location and the different name places. I email John and he emailed back and told me to call him the next day. He must have felt my desparation. He got out his 19th century maps and pin-pointed the exact spot where I needed to go. We even stayed in a 200 year old house that was on his map. He was patient and warm and I felt like he had all the time in the world for me and my problems. John even gave me the names of the nearest churches and the priests that would be there. I went to Ireland 2 days later, with a direct knowledge of where I supposed to go and who I was supposed to meet. John also gave me a lesson on parishes and the difference between civil and church, which had been my biggest stumbling block. I will never forget him. Without his help who knows where I would have ended up in Ireland! The saying goes, "If I can't go to heaven, at least let me end up in Ireland". Maybe because of John's graciousness and generousity he was given a choice.

After taking a break from researching my family trees, I come back here to Sean's website to forge even furthur. BUT, for those of you who are getting frustrated keep searching. In June, my hubby, two children (23 and 27) and I went to Ireland. i took with me information for our 'roots'. Sean was with us, because I him I found my g-g-g-g grandparents farm in Co Donegal, Parish of Killarghtee, Meenagoland Townlands. With help of other websites, I found where it was and how to get there. We met an Irish 'gentleman' on the road. We told him what we were looking for. He began a 20 min lecture on the land, the families and the history of the area. THEN he told me: "Wee lass, you go back down the road past the phone box. Take the left, go on a bit, the road will divide. Pay no mind to the left, stay to the right. About 2 kms ahead will be where your family lived. There is nothing much there now. Two 'ruins' and two modern families. It is where you are looking for." We did as he said. The phone 'box' was a phone booth in the middle of nowhere. i knew it would be all farm land and no town nearby. I have pictures not only physical but mental. I went 'home' that day. My son embraced me when I filled up. I NEVER thought when I started my research I would stand next to 'my familie's ruins'. All of this happened because of Sean and his family's continued support of his hard work. Words cannot truly express my gratitude. But the tears, the smiles and pictures can. Bless you Sean!

I just found this site today 14 Dec 2001 and find it most interesting. I am researching my gg-grandfather (Cornelius Chancey)who came from Ireland but where i do not know.He landed in Galveston, Tx. sometime in the late 1800 but the Storm that destroyed Galveston, also destroyed all records. I wish I had, had the time to know John. I just found his site the other night and got an answer which I hope leads us to our ancestors whom we have been tracing forever it seems. We only recent found our gggg grandfather's death record of July 1st 1779 in Islandanoon. Nothing could be found, then someone gave me the Gaelic Inchnanoon that they thought might be right. We wanted to know where to find it and John's sight here gave a detailed location. We hope this in turn will lead to other answers. So...thank you John for helping to find our John Kittson. I am shocked to read of his passing. He and I "connected" right from the start of our first E-mails. Like myself, he was a sincere detective - finding a clue - and holding on till sucess. He was so interested in "our mystery", that he finally asked me to stand by the phone to await his call. I'm sure we must have talked a good 45 min.'s to an hour. He mentioned how he had "retired" at an early age, and humorously said how he felt he might now be "under his wife's feet. "Obviously, he will be sorely missed -- as also to a great many people's genealogy. My condolences to the family. Could someone tell me more about what happened?

To Sean's family -- I left a condolence note here back several months ago at the time of this fine gentleman's death. I find now that some of his family resides in Eugene, OR, where I was born (1938) and grew up. My sister and I recently visited the old house in downtown Eugene where we lived for 15 years and walked around the block where we roller-skated and rode our bicycles. Mom's old rosebushes were still there in the front yard, and when I bit into a "stolen" grape from the arbor in the backyard where we used to play a flood of childhood memories came pouring over me - the homemade swings in the back yard, playing marbles with the kids on the block, walking to get a huge 10-cent bag of popcorn before going to the movies every Saturday, trading two comic books for one at the Magazine Exchange. I recalled listening to the sounds of walnuts falling from the trees onto the sidewalk at night, going to the old Frances Willard School and my sister having to dash out when it caught on fire and burned to the ground, being married at the Quaker Church there near Acorn Park where my in-laws built all the homes in the area. I worked at the old Eugene Library downtown right out of high schol. My girlfriend who I went to school for 12 years still owns Dotson's Photo Shop. When I heard the chimes of the First Christian Church half a block away it was music to my ears and I broke into tears. They don't have any of those dainty little daisies that lie flat in the grass here in Spokane, I don't believe. When I was a little girl each Christmas they would have the Nativity on the grounds of the church there in Eugene, complete with real sheep! And I loved being just a short drive from the Oregon coast. I hope "Sean" and his family have gotten their feet wet many times in the beautiful Pacific Ocean! Love to all of Mr. Broderick's family, he played an important role in learning about, thus honoring, our loved ones who have gone before.

I won't feel bad for John's Family and friends. In spite of the fact that he seemed to be too young for dying, your dad (brother, friend, etc.) appeared to loved life, he loved you and you loved him. What a memorial he has created for himself. It is 16 years since I began the search for my Irish ancestors - it took me 5 years to find a map which showed the island where my grandfather was born. It was great sadness that I have learnt of the death of your father and my friend John - I have had a mass said for him. I say my friend, because even though we never met face to face, we have corresponded fairly regularly by email since I did work for him on the IrAtlas project for my local area here in Co. Waterford last year. Your father often telephoned me for a chat when he had some good news about the project and the last time was when he had received the map fiches of Ireland. Initially he had sent me an email and I replied and called him a lucky devil. The following morning as I was getting out of bed he rang and we had quite a long chat about his exciting news and how he was hoping to raise the money to buy a machine to transcribe the fiches so he could add them to the web site. I though you might like to see the last message he sent me before his last telephone call to me and my reply. "Bill - I was thinking of you recently when a representative of LocalIreland appeared on my doorstep (not unannounced) with a rather large box of microfiche - The IreAtlas Project is now the owner of a complete set of the First Series of O.S. maps done in the 6"/1 mile scale - there are approx. 1,960 maps in the set and each one is on an individual 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" fiche and covers approx. 24 sq. miles - ah yes, just what I needed - another project to start on. regards, SeanRuad~ Dear Sean, You are a lucky devil. I have been trying to get a print of a few of those but the only ones I could get are in a terrible state - almost indecipherable. The ones I was looking for were the Co. Waterford Barony of Coshmore & Coshbride, the Co. Cork Barony of Condons & Clangibbon, the in Co. Cork Barony of Barrymore just the Civil Parishes of Rathcormack and Gortroe. In the Co. Tipperary Barony of Iffa & Offa West just the Civil parishes of Templetenny and Shanrahan. Ah well that is life. God Bless.." There were a couple of areas that were incomplete in his IrAtlas project and he had hoped to complete but was finding it very hard to get volunteers to do the work here in Ireland. One was adding the RC Parishes and the second was the actual map references for the townlands. The later we had discussed on a few occasions but he could not decide whether it should be GIS, Ordnance Survey Grid or Global reference using degrees. I believe he was in favour of the GIS. No one will, I believe, ever fully comprehend the benefit your father's work on the IrAtlas has brought to so many people around the world, not only in the genealogy community, but as an excellent data base of both historical and current reference for people working here in Ireland on various research projects. John was a kind and generous man. Generous with his time and help to all of us. In one of our conversations he told be he was very busy preparing for the philatelist conference and I mentioned that my niece was a keen stamp collector. After that, without any prompting from me, ever time he sent me anything by post the envelop was covered with unusual small denomination stamps to make up the cost. These were stamps that I had never seen before. Sean told me that he had met The President of Ireland and she had complimented him on his work on the IrAtlas - he was so proud of that moment. In fact it was obvious to me that he was so proud of his Irish ancestors that I always thought he was more Irish than anyone actually born here in Ireland. I know how this feels, as I was born in England and grew up there, but had this fierce love and appreciation for the land of my forefathers. He told me that he had never had the chance to come to Ireland and that made him very sad but he lived in the hope that he would get here sometime - He is certainly looking down on us here in Ireland from Heaven right now. I have been researching my family trees ( and hubbys) for over 6 years now. I have come to John's site many times. Today, I learn of his passing. I never want to 'bother' a webmaster. Now I wish I had......for this site has given me more direction and courage to forge on in my research. Geneology can become an addiction. I lost my mother in January. She gave me endless information for my work. She never flew, she never saw where her family came from in Scotland. I have been close......and as many of you who also 'dig' to learn your roots....the journey is rough, the walls are many BUT..the people such as John make the work easier. John "Sean Ruad" Broderick left a legacy far more substantial than his reknowned IreAtlas Database of Townlands. He left behind hundreds of people who truly were touched by his warmth, his generosity, and his genuine interest in helping people value their Irish heritage as much as he did. I just learned today about SeanRuad most untimely death. I used his site so many times then would discover him on other lists giving the correct and wonderful information. It is amazing to be brought to tears today and it is especially hard since he died on my 50th birthday. I have a perfectionist's mind and I could always relax knowing the correct information was given. And all was well. I feel such a loss and I hope his family knows just how much he is missed personally. He was so available to us. To his family, I feel like I have lost a member of my own family. You did good, Sean. My tears are blinding me after reading this sad news. Sean ruad was a sensitive, caring man, and if he ever sensed in a note I wrote that there might be a problem, he was on the phone in a heartbeat. He was a beautiful man who would not be convinced of his enormous value. My condolences to his family.

At the Northeastern Federation of Stamp Clubs we knew John mostly in person as a fully engaged officer of our organization for the last dozen years. He chaired Philatelic Show 2000 in May 2000, which hosted the annual meeting of the Eire Philatelic Association, and initiated many of the practices and procedures followed by the Federation today. We heard occasional stories from him of how he had successfully used the Internet to track down a person or place in Ireland for someone, it is good to observe that if anything he understated how many people he reached and helped in this fashion. I am shocked and saddened to hear of Sean's death, his contributions to genealogy have been many. He was a very helpful person who obviously loved what he was doing. Here are some soothing words from Yeats, another man who loved Ireland as Sean did: "I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
