The L-R Griffiths DataBase is a unique effort on the part of the staff here at the Leitrim-Roscommon site, and as such, I believe that a little explanation of it's operation and functionality is called for. For those of you who have background experience working with database applications, such as ACCESS, ALPHA, FOCUS and many others, you can appreciate that the Griffiths database is a true database that is resident on the Leitrim-Roscommon server. The database application name is POSTGRES, and as a "true" database, it has all the functionality that is common to database applications. Because of this feature, we will be able to incorporate various changes to our list of user configurable options associated with the searching and output routines. As always, we can only make these improvements and changes when we hear from you, our users and researchers. Make use of the email address to Ed Finn to pass your comments and suggestions along to the staff.
This Griffiths database project was undertaken as a learning experience for our team of programmers, and additionally it was decided that a database of this immense size needed all of the functionality that only a true database could supply. We are committed to the task of importing the entire Griffiths Valuation for all of Leitrim and Roscommon. This is no small undertaking, and will require a long term effort of transcribing the data from hard copy into the computer database. We now have the initial search and display pages programmed, and are working on setting up a WEB input page that will permit volunteers to assist with the major effort of getting the Griffiths data into the database.
We are now actively looking for a dedicated staff of volunteers that would be interested in joining with us to help with the task of getting the Griffiths data into the database. We now have several parishes available that need to be transcribed, and will be receiving more in the not too distant future. Contact Ed Finn if you would like to get involved in this exciting project that will bring a much needed resource on-line for those of us doing Irish research.
There is a CSV EXCEL template (GV_temp.csv) that you can download that will get you started with the proper format for entering the Griffiths data off-line. This file can then be emailed to Ed Finn where it will be proofed and merged with the existing database. Click your mouse on the file name and select the menu choice of "save link as", this will download the EXCEL file right to your computer.
The Leitrim-Roscommon Griffiths DataBase is NOT COMPLETE and will be subject to constant update as new data is uploaded. The following Townlands are in the database and can be searched.
